Brenda J. Clark's summer—Homebodies and Peek Holes
07.2009

With her summer exhibition set for July 17-18 at the Old Art Building in Leland, Expressionist painter Brenda J. Clark can be found out on location these days doing what she knows best—painting boldly and brightly.

Her exhibition, Homebodies and Peek Holes, embodies images of Leelanau that linger in the artist's mind and are an extension of her. The exhibit features paintings that depict seasonal rites of passage that Clark has often wanted to paint, including winter peek holes in Leland.

Her paintings of homebodies tend to be larger in scale, and more figurative and playful, as she lets her mind run to what she knows.

The peek holes depict fleeting scenes that the artist sees every day. These paintings reveal tight glimpses of blues, solid whites and other color masses that poke through the trees along north Lake Street in Leland. When you study each peek hole's space, Clark's palette and mark making plays with your mind as you put the scene together.

To discover the homebodies and peek holes of Expressionist painter Brenda J. Clark, be sure to stop by the Old Art Building in Leland. The exhibit opens on Friday, July 17 at 1:00 p.m. with the opening reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. It continues on Saturday, July 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
